WILKES-BARRE -- Major renovations are set to start within the next two weeks at Boscov's in Wilkes-Barre.

Al Boscov announced the $1 million project last year, a project offering a feeling of stability for other merchants and workers downtown.

Boscov`s has been renovating most of its stores throughout the region, none as large as this million dollar project.

Company officials say it will be beneficial to business and for the greater Wilkes-Barre community.

Soon a million dollars will be pumped into renovating boscov`s department store in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

“The store is really a focal point in the area. A lot of people shop here and they get good buys here. People are comfortable here because it`s been here for so long,” said Bonnie Rice of Forty Fort.

This is the third and largest renovation for the store that has been a fixture in the area for 35 years.

“The investment into the store that Mr. Boscov is making is for our future and the future of the community. We are the community and the community depends on Boscov`s to be here and we want to be here,” said Irene Kelly with Boscov`s.

All five floors of the store will be renovated. Company officials call it a facelift that shows their commitment to staying here.

“We hope to create community interest. I hope it`s only a positive thing that consumers and the community see, that we are putting money into the building. I think that`s only going to help our sales,” said store manager Ryan Thomas.

Company officials say all their stores in the region have been doing well for the past couple of years.

The renovation at this location comes after the Pottsville and the Hazleton stores have just been renovated.

“It`s going to be fresh. It`s going to be clean. It`s getting cleaned up.”

Some renovations are expected to start in about two weeks.

The store will remain open during the entire renovation process that is expected to take about two to three months.
