UNION TOWNSHIP-- State police say a Port Treverton man is dead after a police chase was followed by a crash on Produce Road early Saturday morning.

Troopers say they spotted Jeremiah Herrold speeding in a truck in Selinsgrove, then tried to stop him with emergency equipment just outside the borough, but the chase turned south on Route 11/15, eventually ending up on Produce Road.

Police say troopers ended the pursuit near Silver Creek Road, but Herrold continued on until he crashed into a tree. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. Investigators say he was not wearing a seat belt.

David Strawser lives just up the road and heard the truck speeding by.

"A truck went by really fast and I said 'man he is flying,"said Strawser.

He added, "I heard a crash, and I said, 'he crashed right over here at the neighbors, he had to.'"

We saw nearly as many buggies as cars along the road. Strawser says he's glad nobody else was hurt.

"A lot of Mennonite kids ride bicycles and stuff through here, late at night, the young ones do, and when anybody goes by that fast you are worried that they are going to get hit," said Strawser.

A state police spokesperson tells Newswatch 16 that is is not unusual for a suspect involved in a chase to continue speeding, even after officers stop pursuing him.

As news spread though the Snyder County countryside about what happened people came by to see the crash scene and tried to make sense of the loss of life.

Richard Stauffer said, "It is just a sad way to go, we are created and put here for a purpose, and I just think it is very sad that it had to end this way."

Police say it is expected autopsy results will help them determine if Herrold was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
