MONTOURSVILLE -- A small plane had to make an emergency landing in Lycoming County Wednesday night after the pilot said he hit a deer on takeoff.

Officials said the two-passenger plane was leaving the Northumberland County Airport around 8:30 p.m. and hit a deer on the runway during takeoff.

The pilot said he saw a couple deer on the runway, but thought he would be able to avoid them.

Once in the air, the pilot said he called air traffic control as a precaution because he did not know how bad the damage was.

The plane landed at Williamsport Regional Airport without incident. The plane did not have any major damage, but fire departments were called as a precaution, according to airport officials.

The pilot was not hurt. There is no word on the fate of the deer.
