KULPMONT -- A woman in Northumberland County is accused of stealing more than $1,500 from a paralyzed woman she was supposed to be caring for.
According to court papers, Megan Beury, 26, of Ashland took money from the woman’s bank account and cashed her rent rebate check.
Kristen Shicora spends most of her time inside her apartment in Kulpmont. A few years ago, the 31-year-old was paralyzed in a car crash. She requires constant care. Until late last year, she got that care from Beury.
"She was here six days a week practically," Shicora said.
A few months ago Shicora says she noticed money missing from her bank account and her rent rebate check was gone. She believed Beury was stealing from her.
According to court papers, Beury stole more than $1,500 from Shicora over the course of about six months. Police say Beury stole from Shicora’s bank account as well as her rent rebate check.
Shicora says her cable was shut off, her electric was almost shut off, and she was almost evicted because of this situation.
She turned Beury into the Kulpmont police late last year.
"I had to do what was right for myself."
She says at first she did not want to turn Beury in because she considered her one of her best friends.
"I didn't want to get her in trouble, but she wasn't paying me back and she took a lot more money than I thought she did."
Shicora says she is more hurt than anything.
"Sad and betrayed. I was angry for a bit, but not so much anymore."
Court paperwork lists Beury as being employed by Dedicated Nursing Associates, but when Newswatch 16 contacted the agency, they had no comment on Beury's employment status.
Beury was arrested Thursday and faces a list of charges including forgery and theft. She was released on bail.
