SCRANTON -- A proposed natural gas power plant that many are against came up at Lackawanna County's Planning Commission meeting Thursday.
The planning commission is considering zoning changes that would allow Invenergy to build the plant on old mining land in Jessup.
Some residents are against it citing health and environmental concerns. Others like the idea of bringing revenue and jobs to the area. They voiced their opinions at the meeting.
"What I'm asking for today, what the citizens are asking for, and what everyone is emailing me and calling me about, is to ask you to withhold your recommendation. Do not rush to judgment," said Janine Pavalone of Jessup.
"I can't speak on the legal issues that are before you today. I'm here to speak on behalf of the workers and the jobs that this project will create for people in the area," said Drew Simpson with the Caprenters' Union.
The planning commission has until the first week of April to make a recommendation to officials in Jessup on whether the zoning laws for the proposed site should be changed.
Ultimately, it will be up to the borough to change the laws.
