EAST STROUDSBURG -- Volunteers are needed to help cancer patients at Pocono Medical Center look good and feel better.

There's a new boutique inside the Hughes Cancer Center for patients aimed to help the hundreds of patients going through chemo treatments at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg.

"We kind of help them look good and feel better, so what we do is we put the wigs on them," said Michelle Baughman of Saylorsburg.

Volunteers Marilyn Baughman and Kathleen Katz help women who begin losing their hair pick out a wig for free through the American Cancer Society.

There's a large variety of styles and colors to choose from.

"They come here and they leave a lot happier than when they come in because they know there's a solution to the problem," said volunteer Kathleen Katz of East Stroudsburg.

Pocono Medical Center oncology social worker Lynn Steele says having this service right in the hospital, rather than in a separate office, is helpful for patients who are already overwhelmed.

"Bringing the wig program right here underneath the roof of the Hughes Cancer center along with the American Cancer Society has been very helpful. Patients are comfortable here," said Steele.

The center is only open by appointment and they're looking for more volunteers to help do fittings. It's a job Baughman has been doing around northeast Pennsylvania for 15 years.

"It keeps me grounded, it makes you, when you think you have a problem and then you see this," said Baughman.

"Anybody that feels they want to make a difference I think it's worthy to come in and take the course," said Katz.

For more information about the program and how you can help, contact the American Cancer Society. You can call them at 1-800-227-2345 and they will connect you with your local office.
