DURYEA -- Schott Glass says it will rebuild after a massive fire devastated its facility in Luzerne County.

Workers gathered Friday afternoon to talk about what the news means for them.

Schott officials held a meeting at the Germania Hose Company in Duryea, where they told employees they not only plan to rebuild but they are going to help employees while they do.

Outside Schott Glass, someone has put up this sign that says "Schott, we will survive."

The company has announced it plans to rebuild the plant that was badly damaged in a fire Tuesday night.

Ron Warunek worked at Schott Glass for decades, and says he wants to do what he can to help rebuild the plant that makes high-tech glass for aerospace businesses and other companies.

"I am going to go scour or go see somebody, see if I can volunteer to clean up and stuff if they need help. Because of the 40 years they gave me, I'd like to see them get up and back as soon as possible for my fellow workers over there," Warunek said.

Crews have begun cleaning up the estimated $50 million in damage from the fire, and Schott officials say employees will likely help eventually.

Nearly 200 of the 230 employees of Schott Glass in Duryea attended a meeting where company officials announced their plans.

"God bless Schott for what they are doing. A tragedy happened that could've really affected a lot of people in a lot worse ways, because of how they are reaching out to help," said Ryan Cappola, a three-year employee.

The company told employees who were scheduled for an upcoming layoff that they will be paid until April 1.

Everyone else will be compensated until the plant is operational again.

"To ensure that all their employees are paid until operation resumes is just very, very, very generous of this company to do that. Not too many people will," Cappola said.

There is still no exact date for when the employees will be allowed back in the plant.

Company officials will only say that they are working to get them back in as quickly as possible.
