WASHINGTON DC -- Pottsville native Megan Brennan comes from a postal service family.
Growing up in Schuylkill County, her father worked overnights at the Pottsville post office. Now, Jerry Brennan's daughter is in charge of the United States Postal Service.
Brennan is the first woman to hold the job, a position that is older than the United States Constitution.
"It's a long way from the back dock of the Pottsville post office," said her father.
The graduate of Nativity BVM High School, Brennan started her career in 1986 as a postal carrier in Lancaster. She said hard work gave her chances to get into management and move up within the service.
"I think if you apply yourself and you work hard and you continue to grow and learn, there are opportunities," said the Postmaster General.
Brennan understands that she takes the job at a time when the postal service is struggling financially and has reduced hours at 50 percent of offices.
She believes a new plan can still make mail delivery profitable.
"We need to continue to change and improve, like adopting new products and services that are relevant in a digital environment."
Combined, the Brennan family has 125 years in the postal service between her father, her two brothers and herself.
One of her brothers, Brian, still walks a route in Ashland. He said the family isn't too competitive when it comes to work, but basketball, that's another story.
"Megan probably hasn't gotten off her set shot since against me since she was like 12," said Brian Brennan.
The New Postmaster General said her office at the postal service headquarters in Washington DC is a far cry from her days at Nativity. But the Schuylkill county native's family said, in their eyes, she was always in charge.
With most of the Brennan family still living in Schuylkill County, the Postmaster General makes plenty of trips from the capital to the coal region.
Brennan said, "I love to go home. Schuylkill County and Pottsville will always be home."
Brennan also has an idea for a stamp that represents her home turf: "Yuengling brewery!"
She said a close second is Roma Pizza.
