No H2O at the Fire Department

THOMPSON -- As this winter drags on the water problems keep popping up all over our area.

If the icicles aren't a good enough indication of how cold this winter has been in Susquehanna County, just look inside the Thompson Hose Company. The faucets have run dry.

Hose company president Bob Conklin said the department fell victim to a frozen water main along Water Street this weekend.

"They noticed there wasn't any water. We had to turn off proper things so we didn't hurt anything," said Conklin.

Since there has been no water at the Thompson Hose Company for a few days now it's an inconvenience, according to the hose company's president. For instance, firefighters can't clean the trucks. But in the event of an emergency, they would like to have water so they can help people in a time of need.

"We are a registered Red Cross shelter in the event of disaster or emergency or power outage," said Conklin. "We could get by. It would take some extra measures."

Firefighters in Thompson are on the water company's waiting list for repairs thanks to so many other problems in the area.

A 2-inch water main on Broad Street in Susquehanna borough burst, knocking out water to a handful of residents.

A spokesperson for Pennsylvania American Water said the deep frost is to blame and neighbors certainly understand why.

"It's been a very rough winter, it certainly has, very cold," said Mary Ann Testa.

Testa is lucky to have her water but feels for her neighbors who should be back online within the day.

"It's terrible without water, you can't do anything."

As for the Thompson Hose Company, its president said he's OK waiting knowing that others are suffering from the cold without water.

"The families at home, you need to take care of those, too. I understand that. And the guys have been working around the clock to get everyone back. It's been a really cold winter and this is what we're dealing with," added Conklin.
