CLARKS SUMMIT -- For a lot of people, a day doesn't get started without a cup of joe in the morning.

But the question is how much coffee is too much?

Newswatch 16 stopped at Duffy's Coffee House in Clarks Summit to find out exactly how much coffee people drink.

"I drink about three or four cups, sometimes five or six a day.  I just enjoy the smell of it and enjoy the taste of it," Elizabeth VanGorder of Paupack said.

That might seem like a lot of coffee, but a new report from the federal government's Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommends drinking three to five cups of coffee a day to get it's full benefits.

"I think I'm in the green zone then. I think I'm good," Nick Gettel said.

Nick Gettel, an employee at the coffee shop on South State Street, says it's hard not to turn to a fresh cup of java a few times a day.

"It's really hard when you work here. Because you know, you mess up a drink, who's drinking it? You know, I end up drinking it," Gettel said.

The report also found coffee can have several health benefits including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Coffee may even have a positive effect against Parkinson's disease.

"I've read up on a lot of stuff with coffee. Like the benefits and the antioxidants that's in it. It's not all that surprising," Michael Gillotti said.

"My coffee consumption isn't the most important thing. I think everybody else's is. So, I like to help people. That's an awesome discovery with that," Hannah Radkiewicz said.

While the report says that drinking several cups of coffee each day can have health benefits, it also warns about the extra calories that can come from adding things such as cream, milk and sugar.
