JERSEY SHORE -- With all this cold weather we're having, it seems more people than ever need government help to pay their heating bills. The state says there is only so much money to hand out to each person and no additional help is available at this point.
Home after home, Justin Reighard is out all day delivering heating oil for Hollick's Coal Yard and Oil Service in Jersey Shore.
"We get calls every day. I get phone calls for people who need oil as I'm out on the road. We do emergency stops or adding more on. It's just go, go, go. It's always go, go, go," said Reighard.
Hollick says by this time of the season some of his customers have a hard time paying for their heating oil. Luckily for them there are programs willing to help.
"Anything helps with the price of heating someone's home. Every little bit helps,” said Jon Hollick.
The problem is the state Department of Human Services says people in need receive only up to $1,000 per year from the LIHEAP program. After they use that money they have to wait until the next heating season to apply for more.
John Chapman stopped by Pickelner Fuel Company in Williamsport. He already used up his LIHEAP grant.
"You get $400 through them and you know you burn through that and then you back on a budget. Want to get oil and get, you know, get some heat back in the house," said John Chapman.
The state says nearly 4,000 people have used LIHEAP in Lycoming County so far this year. Rebecca Eisenman wants to join them.
"We're behind like everybody. I mean with the weather you have to use more with the weather and as cold as it's been we have to try and stay warm," said Rebecca Eisenman from Williamsport.
We met Eisenman outside of Lycoming County Assistance Office in Williamsport.
"We're at the office to try and get heat assistance," said Eisenman.
So far this season Eisenman says she's been able to keep up with her electric and heating bills but now.
"How is it in my house right now? It's drafty, very drafty," said Eisenman.
Human Services says the quickest way to apply is online. People can also request an application by calling the Statewide LIHEAP Hotline at 1-866-857-7095 or pick up an application at your local county assistance office
