Splashing Winter Away At The Water Park

POCONO TOWNSHIP -- Folks fed up with winter say they aren't waiting for summer to come to them; they are finding summer fun all on their own in the Poconos.

The indoor water park at Great Wolf Lodge is booming with business.

“The water’s warm. Slides are fun. It’s fun. It’s a good time,” said John Friedman from New Jersey.

With this winter’s temperatures blowing at full frost, the humid, balmy 84-degree air inside the water park is enough to make a grown man cry.

“I’m tired. I want summer man. That’s why I came here, to get a little bit of summer, you know, the pools,” said Anthony Marinello from Long Island.

This is the resort’s main attraction here in the Poconos and it’s no surprise that in mid-February, this is a popular place for snowbirds to flock from the cold, with the water temperature always at 82 degrees.

“Oh yeah, it’s great. I’m having a good time,” said Debby Disimone from Long Island.

“Awesome! It is so cold outside, it is just awesome to be in such a warm place and have all fun and everything,” said Alexandra Hernandez from Pittston.

“It’s crazy, you wouldn’t think there’d be this much people here because it’s so cold outside, but it’s awesome to be swimming in the winter,” said Skylar Cupano from Pittston.

Only guests staying at the resort can use the water park.

Employees say rooms are being reserved the minute they’re available and they are thanking the frigid weather for that.

“It has been busier lately, with the cold weather and it’s been perpetual, that people are making shorter plans to come out and it’s definitely been a little bit busier. It’s warm in here,” said Bill Colavito, general manager of Great Wolf.

“I was just thinking about that, watching the kids go down the slide. Hard to believe it’s freezing cold outside and so wonderful in here for them and they keep going and going and going, wear me out,” said Margie Laratta from New Jersey.

“I’m so tired of it already, the cold,” said John Salerno from Long Island.

Many folks say they’re going crazy with cabin fever and what better place to blow off steam, than a steamy one?

“It’s definitely a nice break from the cold that’s for sure, especially when you have a lot of kids running around,” said Christine Friedman.
