UPDATE: Repairs have been completed at East Stroudsburg South. The high school will be open on Tuesday.
EAST STROUDSBURG -- A pipe failure sent water gushing into a school's basement and left workers with a lot to clean up.
A broken pipe at East Stroudsburg South High School cancelled classes for the day.
Workers in the building at 5 a.m. discovered the problem first.
"The first responders here witnessed water coming from the boiler room doors which was a pretty good indication that something had gone wrong," said director of administrative services Eric Forsyth.
"We can't have school without having running water for restrooms, cooking and drinking etc., so we had to call off school for the day here," said assistant superintendent Tom Lesniewski.
The burst pipe is a six-inch line that is a main supply from the street. The part to fix it had to be picked up near Reading. School officials were on their way in the morning to go get it.
That broken pipe was being held together by a big hunk of metal but when it broke off, the basement filled with water and now the school's trying to dry it all out.
"The electrical equipment that got wet was able to shield itself from the water but it's been opened up just to make sure there's no extra moisture in there while the building is out of commission," said Forsyth.
Just last week, another East Stroudsburg Area School closed because it had no water due to a frozen water tower.
Add in all the snow days and delays and educators say it's causing a little bit of concern.
"Mondays have been challenging because of the weather. This just so happens to have occurred on a Monday," said Forsyth.
"Yeah, it is but we always do what's best for the students in terms of the safety of our kids," said Lesniewski.
The school district moved Monday night's scheduled board meeting to J.T. Lambert Elementary while they work to repair the pipe.
District officials say as of right now school should open as scheduled on Tuesday.
