Jake completed chemotherapy and they later married. They were happy to reach five years without cancer, when patients are considered cured.
But it wasn’t the end of Jake’s fight as he was diagnosed with a different form of testicular cancer, and this one had no cure.
Kelly became pregnant with twins shortly after Jake’s diagnosis, but found out 17 weeks in that their daughter, Avery, had multicycstic dysplastic kidneys, preventing her lungs from growing.
Avery died just hours after being born.
Their son, Evan, has helped Kelly cope, knowing Jake only has months to live.
“I feel like we were blessed with twins because Jake is too good of a father not to be one in heaven,” Kelly told WXPI. “He gets Avery in heaven and I get Evan here.”
