SUNBURY -- Some people are not able to get to church on Ash Wednesday, so staff and volunteers from St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Sunbury brought Ash Wednesday to them.

Ashes in hand, Reverend Robin Jarrell set up shop in Cameron Park.

"It's not that we're trying to stray away from the tradition. We're trying to help people understand that holiness exists outside of church," Jarrell said.

The program is called "Ashes to Go" and it's in its second year in Sunbury. People walked up to the gazebo in Cameron Park and got their ashes.

"It's absolutely wonderful. This is a gift from God himself," Sis Berge said.

After the group gave out ashes in Cameron Park, they walked up and down Market Street, spreading the word here in Sunbury.

Reverend Jarrell did not just give out ashes.

"People sometimes want their ashes, sometimes they're just curious and want to ask us questions. Sometimes they just want to pray and we're equipped to do all those things," Jarrell said.

Someone who's grateful for the program is Brenda Reichenbach of Sunbury.

"I really appreciate it so I can still be part of everything without leaving my building," Reichenbach said.

Reichenbach works at Tony's Custom Tailor Shop on Market Street.

"I'm the sole person here so I can't go anywhere. I wanted to go to church today and everything, but they brought it to me and it was really nice," Reichenbach said.

Reverend Jarrell placed ashes on the foreheads of more than 30 people in Sunbury in the park and walking down Market Street.
