BRODHEADSVILLE -- For the second year in a row, a church in Monroe County is offering ashes to go, and cars lined up Wednesday afternoon at a church in Brodheadsville.
It was Ash Wednesday with a bit of convenience. The Zion United Lutheran Church on Route 209 in Brodheadsville offered ashes curbside. Many driving by stopped in to mark the beginning of Lent.
"I wasn't able to get to church and I think this is going to help a lot to help begin the Lenten season," said Peggy Quigley of Effort.
Pastor Ann Merlot says "ashes to go" has gotten lots of positive feedback, and it helps the church reach the community they serve a bit easier.
"Lots of people who said, you know, I work two jobs, I just can't get to a worship service."
Sarah Fenstermaker says she usually comes to the evening Ash Wednesday service, but life is a little hectic at the moment
"She has a lot of homework and we couldn't make it here tonight. We go to this church."
Her daughter Stephanie says with the colder weather, ashes to go was also a nice alternative.
"That's nice, you get to stay warm and bundled up."
Many folks driving through Brodheadsville didn't even know about "ashes to go" but they saw the signs and said they just had to stop.
"No not at all, I think it's a fantastic idea, fantastic. Somebody is thinking outside the box," said Suzette Kurtz of Lehighton.
Kurtz usually goes to church in Jim Thorpe and only drove down Route 209, because she was on her way home from an eye surgery.
"I was supposed to go right from the surgery home and I saw that and I thought it would be an absolute savior for me."
This is the second year that Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville has offered "ashes to go." They plan to do it again next Ash Wednesday.
