MONROE COUNTY -- The winter has left its mark on Interstate 380 in Monroe County. Pothole after pothole can be found along a stretch of the highway in the Mount Pocono area.
Truck driver Tim Conklin of Wapwallopen says he's seen some of the worst of them here as he drives between New Jersey and Ontario, Canada.
"You know the frost and thaw effect. It does a lot more damage so road crews have to work more and spend more money. It's not fun, but we have to live with it," Conklin said.
PennDOT crews were out early in the day and late into the afternoon Wednesday trying to fix just some of those big potholes. They scraped out the potholes and put down cold patch.
"Of course it adds to the frustration when you go down to one lane traffic, but then that's what you have to deal with for that," said Conklin.
R.P. Hoffman's Mini Mart sits right off the Mount Pocono exit. Workers say heavy truck traffic may be to blame for some of those massive holes this year.
"A lot of people are bringing a lot of materials to Kalahari, the new waterpark mostly, but they go up to New York state, all over. We get everything," worker Kristen Brickey said.
Even though PennDOT is fixing the potholes on I-380, many drivers say with so much winter still left to go, they're not sure how long these patches are going to last. Ken Balliet of Kunkletown says he's taken a hit from those potholes just this past week.
"Yeah, in the recent, but I know where they're at now, so I kind of avoid them if I can. I don't steer out of my lane if I don't have to, but you can avoid them if you know where they're at," said Balliet.
PennDOT crews tell us this patch is only temporary and they're planning to get a more permanent fix done when warmer weather comes around.
"They're doing the best job they can, I'm sure. They have to drive on them also so they're all in the same boat we are," Balliet said.
