After years of being in business, many RadioShack stores are closing up shop. We now know which stores will close in our area and how many.

The "store closing" and "clearance sale" signs are up at a RadioShack in Taylor. Similar signs are going up at more than 1,700 stores nationwide. After more than 90 years in business, RadioShack declared bankruptcy last week. Part of that includes closing these stores in our area:

Analysts blame online competition and changing shopping habits for the demise of so many RadioShack stores, but loyal customers are glad not all of them in our area are closing.

"It's the place you always go when you need a mix of 100 different things," said Scott Watrous.

Watrous, a RadioShack regular, just bought a cell phone charger for his mother. He went to the one in the Clarks Summit area. It is staying open for now, but Watrous is sad seeing so many of the stores he's relied on close.

"I suppose everyone gets everything online, that's the biggest thing. But I like to walk in and try it and see if it fits."

"They've been around since I was a kid," said Purcell Belton, who was at the RadioShack inside the Mall at Steamtown; another store staying open.

RadioShack says the company Standard General has agreed to buy many of the surviving stores, but they will be changing, including the likely addition of Sprint Wireless stores within stores.

RadioShack has lost many shoppers over the years, but still has some loyalists.

"Maybe twice a month to get little gidgets and gadgets. I'm glad to see it's staying open," said Belton.

As for the stores that are closing, clearance sales will run over the next weeks or months depending on the store as the RadioShack many generations knew comes to an end.
