WILKES-BARRE -- Cracks are covering a road in Luzerne County, making things difficult for drivers, and now crews are trying to get to the root of the problem.
It's a sight to see on Empire Street in Wilkes-Barre.
Doug Takacs of Wilkes-Barre said, "Looks like the whole thing is going to cave in. That's not good."
"I've never seen it happen this way. Never. The road is bad," said Ray Williams, Wilkes-Barre.
For the past couple of days, neighbors have noticed more and more cracks in the road, and the cracks aren't small. In some spots, the cracks are creating uneven levels the size of the sole of a boot.
"You'll see it up and down and up and down. It's just getting bad. I'm pretty concerned about parking my vehicles there," said Mark Besancon, Wilkes-Barre.
The cracks can be seen on the road the length of 10 houses. Besancon has lived on Empire Street for three years, and he says he's never seen something like this before.
"We don't know what's going on here, whether it's mine subsidence or it's a pipe that's collapsed or water," said Besancon. "We don't know what it is, but we're trying to get someone to look at it to figure out what's wrong."
City workers were out on the scene earlier on Monday and tell Newswatch 16 they'll be back out during the day Tuesday. They will need to dig up part of the road to find the source of the problem and then begin repairing it.
A sewer line runs directly underneath the street where the road has begun cracking up, but there's no official word yet on what caused the road to begin looking like a spider's web.
Neighbors say they're worried about what it could mean if crews need to dig the entire street up.
"I'm in the front of the house. I'll be hearing it," said Doug Takacs, Wilkes-Barre. "Usually quiet around here, but I guess I'll be ready for snow noise."
"If they start to repair it, I have no place else to park. I'll have to park on another street somewhere. This is the only place I have to park for where I live," said Besancon.
