EAST STROUDSBURG -- Someone threw a puppy into a snowbank outside the Wal-Mart in East Stroudsburg and left it, according to authorities.

A shopper saw it all unfold and rescued the puppy, likely saving its life.

According to that shopper, the 5-week-old puppy was thrown from a car and into a snowbank, and left. That puppy was malnourished, dehydrated, and battling worms.

Thankfully, that puppy is in a much warmer place, and getting some much-needed TLC.

The puppy named Bonnie Belle looks happy as can be running around AWSOM Animal Shelter near Stroudsburg. The little pup is lucky to have survived after being thrown from a car outside East Stroudsburg's Wal-Mart last week.

"Someone who was in the parking lot going into the store saw a car driving by one of the aisle ways and actually saw someone throw what looked to them to be a puppy, into the snowbank," said director of operations Rich Homar.

Veterinarians said the German shepherd-hound mix is now hopping around the shelter, but still recovering from worms, dehydration, and other issues.

"She's a little thin and underweight for her size, but she's doing pretty good. She's eating well now."

The ordeal terrified some students who shop at that Wal-Mart at least once a week.

"I can't even think of a reason why that's justified or why the thought would come through that person's mind," said ESU freshman Joshua Coleman.

Volunteers at AWSOM say had that Good Samaritan not found little Bonnie Belle tossed in a snowbank outside the Wal-Mart in East Stroudsburg, her chances of surviving weren't good at all.

"Probably slim to none, being in the snow bank, walking the wrong way, getting stuck, or just freezing her little paws off. She could have froze to death in the snowbank."

Bridget Clark, age 12, is just one of the volunteers at the shelter helping give Bonnie Belle the high-maintenance care she needs while recovering.

"When I found out what happened to the German shepherd I was so surprised because it's a very valuable dog and it's so cute. I don't know why someone would throw it out of a car."

Bonnie Belle could be on her way to a warm, happy home in about a month. The shelter is taking applications for anyone who would like to adopt Bonnie Belle. They say at this time there is no police investigation into just who threw the pup, volunteers are just happy they're able to get her the help she needs.
