WILKES-BARRE -- Authorities in Luzerne County now have a suspect in a homicide at the Interfaith Heights Apartment Complex.

Friends gathered at the Wyoming Valley Rescue Mission in Wilkes-Barre for prayers and to remember Bryan Hogan, a veteran who liked to help people down on their luck.

"He was a really good guy. I am going to miss him," said a neighbor who didn't want to be identified. "I hadn't seen him in a long time. I was happy he looked like he was doing really good."

According to detectives, it was also the place where he met the man suspected of killing him.

Matthew Vantine is currently locked up in the Luzerne County jail charged with a knifepoint robbery at a Turkey Hill early Tuesday morning.

His girlfriend told detectives that, before the robbery, they were staying with Hogan in his apartment on Coal Street when the two men argued and Vantine attacked Hogan, leaving him bleeding.

When the suspect was arrested for the Turkey Hill robbery, police said they found him with blood on his socks and a bloody folded blade.

It wasn't until Friday that Hogan's body was discovered.

People at the mission said they are struggling to understand how and why this happened.

"It is hard. The world is changing so fast, it is hard to find morals, it is hard to find faith," said Dr. Wayne Nichol, pastor of Parsons Baptist Church.

"You don't get to pick the way you are going to go. I don't think I would want to go that way," said the unidentified neighbor. "But going out helping somebody, even if they are going to turn on you, I think that is the best way to do it."

No charges have been filed yet.

Newswatch 16 spoke with a friend of the victim who didn't want to go on camera.

She said she ate dinner at the mission Sunday night with both men and is glad to see investigation moving forward.
