DUNMORE -- The gas lines at more than 1,000 apartments in Lackawanna County are being checked as a precaution after two major gas leaks in the last two months.
Checking gas lines is the new normal for inspectors with the Lackawanna County Housing Authority. We found a worker checking lines at an apartment complex in Dunmore.
In light of the gas leak in Taylor a few weeks ago and a deadly explosion in Dunmore in December, the county housing authority is checking all of its properties.
Longtime residents like Theresa Healey are happy to see the lines are being checked.
"As long as everyone is safe, as long as it not happens like it happened up the road there," said Dunmore resident Theresa Healey.
It's quite a task to check more than 1,100 meters that the housing authority owns in Lackawanna County, but officials say, in light of recent events, tenants' safety is important.
"After what happened in Taylor, we have been checking. Obviously the gas lines are underground, but where they come out of the ground we've been checking to see if there have been any leaks and we're taking an active approach to take a look to see if we have any other leaks," said Lackawanna County Housing Authority solicitor Paul Walker.
Officials say they have checked more than 200 gas lines this week, and so far everything has come back just fine. Officials say checking the lines will now be a routine job. Inspectors will check three properties a month, just to make sure there are no problems down the road.
