TOWANDA -- A man admitted locking a girl in a cage in his home in Bradford County was sentenced Thursday.

Richard Frankenfield was sentenced to seven to 23 months in jail for locking a young girl in a makeshift cage over the course of several years.

The judge in Bradford County says she gave him the maximum sentence because he showed no remorse.

Richard Frankenfield had some choice words for Newswatch 16 as he walked into the Bradford County Courthouse.

"Don't you have better things to do? You have no life? No life at all?"

Frankenfield pleaded guilty last month to recklessly endangering another person. He left the courthouse in handcuffs after being sentenced.

Frankenfield and his wife Mary Beth were charged in 2013 with child abuse.

Police say the couple locked the child in a cage and then a closet inside their home on Route 220 near Dushore. Police say the couple told them they did it because the young girl has cerebral palsy, a brain disorder that impairs movement.

Police say the abuse started in 2010 when the girl was 10 years old. The Frankenfields kept her in a cage they made by nailing plywood over a crib in their house.

Investigators say when the girl turned 11, the couple locked her in a closet in her bedroom.

Frankenfield's attorney called it a case of bad judgment and says the Frankenfields are responsible people protecting a child they couldn't control.

The girl is no longer living with the Frankenfields and was at the sentencing. She says she is relieved it is over.

Frankenfield's plea agreement called for him to spend five to 23 months in jail but the judge says he showed no remorse and gave him an extra two months.

"Maybe you should investigate Children and Youth. That would be worthwhile," Frankenfield said.

"Well do you have anything to say about the sentencing? Not at all?"

"No," he replied.

Mary Beth Frankenfield pleaded guilty last year to a misdemeanor charge and was sentenced to between five and 23 months in jail. She was released after serving five months.
