JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP -- A new recreation complex is in the works for a community in Lackawanna County.

An empty field in Lackawanna County may one day be the new home of a recreation complex. Right now, Jefferson Township doesn't have its own park or recreational fields, but township officials are working to change that.

"I think that would be great. You know, summertime come and take the kids out, slides, they would love it," said township resident Alisha Kellogg.

"We used to live down in the valley and the valley has, like, Mellow Park and it has tons of swing sets, and up here there is not really too much of anything," said another township resident.

A few years ago Jefferson Township purchased 42 acres off of Route 348 near a local business. Now they are surveying residents to find out what they would like to see in the empty space.

"Lots of fun things for the kids, you know, so they can get outside and they're not sitting inside all of the time."

Even though these surveys are already available for homeowners in Jefferson Township, township officials say it could be years before a park is actually in place.

Jefferson Township officials tell Newswatch 16, they have already received some state funding to help construct the complex.

Chris Neari and her daughter hope to see a park closer to home, sooner rather than later.

"It would be really nice. We like to go to the Hamlin Park which is about five miles up the road and we like to take walks and take the dog."

Chris's daughter Emma already has a few ideas for the empty space.

"A slide, monkey bars, and a see saw!"

Jefferson Township officials tell Newswatch 16 they will continue to apply for grants to help fund the recreation complex.
