A Good Day To Hit The Ice

LEWISBURG -- People in Union County laced up their skates and took advantage of the winter weather Monday afternoon.

With school out and many businesses closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, folks took advantage of the winter weather and hit the Lewisburg ice rink at the Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority.

"I had off school, so I just thought it would be fun to come up here," said Jon Fisher of Northumberland.

Don Roarty of Lewisburg spent the day at the rink with his daughter. He says she just learned how to skate and she couldn't wait to get back out on the ice.

"It's nice to just be able to go down the street. She sees friends and it's cheap, so it's great," Roarty said.

The outdoor rink at St. Lawrence and St. Mary Streets in Lewisburg opened just over a week ago. The people who run the rink say skaters have been taking advantage of every opportunity.

"We've been doing great business and just hoping that everyone knows to come on out," said program coordinator Maggie Testa.

Many of the skaters we spoke to say the best part about the rink is the fact that there is plenty of room to accommodate everyone. You can play hockey on one side and free skate on the other, plus it gets everyone outside during the winter months.

"You have a lot more skating room than you might in other places, and at the other place we used to go to, it would be so crowded," said Haley Davis of Lewisburg.

"The older kids are playing hockey and they are courteous to the little kids, so I feel very safe having my daughter here," Roarty added.

As long as temperatures cooperate, the outdoor ice rink in Lewisburg is expected to be open from now through March.
