UPDATE MONDAY 10:30 a.m. -- The 12-year-old boy critically injured in the wreck has died, according to state police.

MILFORD -- State police say a man is dead and his wife and a child were injured in a massive collision.

Following the chain reaction crash in Pike County, Interstate 84 was closed in both directions and drivers were left stranded for hours.

That deadly wreck happened around 10 a.m. Sunday near Milford and set off a chain reaction.

State police said Pablo Pons, 34, of Honesdale is dead.

A 12-year-old boy is in critical condition and his wife, Maria Pons, was injured as well.

Police said the three were not wearing seat belts.

Troopers said around 15 vehicles were involved, including a tractor-trailer that hit Pons after he was thrown from the car.

Traffic was stopped on the interstate for several hours until it reopened around 4 p.m.

That closure caused traffic to back up for more than 15 miles leaving drivers with no choice but to wait for hours.

"There is one person dead. That is a shame, bad luck," said Joe Hague of Olyphant.

"It looks devastating, pretty ominous. We're hoping we can turn around and go back to Lake Wallenpaupack." said Tia Katakozinos of Lake Ariel.

"What can we do? Sit and wait," said Adele Berg of Milford.

PennDOT trucks drove on the shoulder of the road on their way to the crash scene.

State police said the icy conditions made cleaning up the scene a challenge. Even a state police cruiser was damaged. It was empty when it was hit.

State police said they made the decision to leave some of the vehicles from the wreck by the side of the road so they could dedicate as many resources as possible to getting the road back open. They said those vehicles will be towed Monday.

4:30 p.m. UPDATE: State police said Pablo Pons, 34, of Honesdale was killed. They said he was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers said Pons lost control on the icy road and the vehicle overturned throwing Pons and another passenger from the vehicle. Pons was then struck by a commercial vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passengers, Maria Pons, 33, of Honesdale and a 12-year-old boy, were taken to the hospital. The 12-year-old is in critical condition.

4:00 p.m. UPDATE: I-84 is back open.

3:45 p.m. UPDATE: State police are no longer calling the accident a hit and run. Police said one man was killed. They said about 15 vehicles were involved in the wreck. Several people were taken to the hospital with injuries, but police did not have an exact count on how many. I-84 East is still closed.

1:30 p.m. UPDATE: State police in Pike County are looking for the driver who troopers believe was involved in a hit and run Sunday morning on I-84.

Authorities tell us a pedestrian was hit by a black four-door sedan around mile marker 45.  That car left the scene.

Troopers believe the car has front end and undercarriage damage.

11:15 a.m. UPDATE: Both lanes on part of Interstate 84 are shut down Sunday after several cars wrecked.  Crews on scene tell Newswatch 16 at least one person is dead.

It happened in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 45.5 near the Milford Exit just before 10:00 a.m.

Authorities have not given the name of the person killed or what caused the wreck.   As of 12:30 p.m., all lanes on I-84 are still shut down.

State police are asking drivers to watch for icy roadways and drive carefully.
