SCRANTON -- The cold didn't keep boaters from dipping their paddles in the river in Scranton.

The first-ever ShiverFest kicked off at noon Saturday on the Lackawanna River from the Parker Street Bridge.

Boaters paddled their way through a two-and-a-half mile course.

Money raised at the kayak and canoe race will benefit the Lackawanna River Corridor Association.

Organizers say the cold temps were a big part of the experience.

"Some of them went for a dunk or two after they landed just to show they're not afraid of the cold," said Bernie McGurl, LRCA executive director. "We're going to be celebrating the Lackawanna river like this 24/7, 365 days a year."

The finish line was at Sweeney's beach and everyone thawed out with a party at the Hilton in Scranton.
