SCOTT TOWNSHIP -- Investigators say a deadly fire in Lackawanna County Wednesday night was accidental. It happened during one of the coldest evenings we've seen in a while.

There's not much left of that home on Grandview Drive in Scott Township.

According to the coroner, Michael Pivovarnick, 58, died from smoke inhalation when he went back into the burning home to rescue a pet.

A state police fire marshal's say the cause of the blaze is accidental.

"It's a total loss; you can see the frame is left. You can see it's total devastation," said George Harris of Scott Township.

Neighbors say three people lived in the home near Justus.

"I was afraid that the, that the whole family would be…in that home, and I was, I was so scared," said a neighbor.

People who live on Grandview Drive says the family who lives in the house have been there for decades, and now it's sad to see this.

"They've been here for 25 years. We've been here much longer, and they're just good people and I hope that they will be alright now."

Neighbors say they also feel for the firefighters whose job was made even harder by single-digit temperatures, with water from their hoses freezing on the ground and sticking to their equipment.

At one point, fire crews even had to call in a salt truck to keep the streets safe for emergency responders

"I was a firefighter when I lived in New York State, and this is when you would get the calls, when it was zero or below, so it scares you."
