SOUTH CANAAN TOWNSHIP -- We're in the midst of a deep freeze to start the new year. Cold temperatures compounded with winds make it feel even colder outside.

Some of us are forced to brave the cold for many reasons. Sometimes it's as simple as having to fill up the gas tank.

No matter what, people we found said it's important to be prepared and to keep exposure to the cold at a minimum.

It was so cold along Route 296 near Waymart you could not only feel it, you could hear it.

Fierce winds blew across the fields and covered parts of the road with snow.

In order to keep the heat on during this cold snap, Gary Miller delivered propane to homes all over the area.

"They have to have it, that's for sure," he said.

Miller said while he's looking forward to getting back into a warm truck, he’s dressed for the cold.

"Just two [layers], pair of jeans, bib, what I have on, that's it," he said when asked how many layers he has on. "It sometimes gets hard, gotta do what you gotta do."

John Kutchmanich from Saint Tikhon's Monastery was in the same boat. He had to pump his own gas and was dressed in a lambskin coat and hat.

"I tell some of those people up there, 'Where's your hat?' That's what momma would say, where’s your hat, makes a difference."

Just a quick trip to the post office turned Jerusalem Pugh's hands ice-cold. But she's celebrating the Julian calendar Christmas, no matter what the weather.

"It`s the season, and it`s a beautiful day for our Russian Christmas."
