TUNKHANNOCK -- Temperatures were stuck in the teens in much of our area on Tuesday and this is just the start of the cold this week.

Many places will be near zero or below at some point this week and in Wyoming County, we found the forecast for this cold has many people taking precautions.

Mark Shupp is a busy guy this week. We caught up with him filling up his truck with propane at McCain Gas and Electric near Tunkhannock. With temperatures so cold, customers are calling to get the tanks to heat their homes filled.

"The phones are ringing off the wall in there probably now, " Shupp said.

We see it every time temperatures get this cold, furnaces working nearly nonstop, using a lot of fuel.

Shupp finds himself needing to refill the truck a lot.

"They'll call in and want gas delivery and we don't hesitate. We go right out to them, and we're good with our customers."

There certainly are signs of the bitter cold all over the place, but there are a lot of people taking precautions to make sure water freezing doesn't happen inside their house.

"If they watch this newscast they should be thinking about the next couple weeks and be ready for it," said Don Gacha at Gay's True Value in Tunkhannock. Pipe insulation and heat tape are 'hot' items there. Workers say heaters are going fast, too.

Dan Yale was there to get one for the Fireplace Restaurant.

"We have one space in the basement where the plumbing goes through that we might need a little heat in case it gets really cold."

With temperatures only going down this week, some places below zero, Gay's reminds customers it's best to come in sooner, rather than later.

"It's a lot cheaper to come in ahead of time to fix something than fix water damage when a pipe breaks."
