LUZ DEADLY SHOOTING 1-3

UPDATE: The Luzerne County coroner has ruled Dukus' death a homicide, saying she died from a gunshot wound to the head.

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP -- Police were called to Pavlick Road near Hunlock Creek in Luzerne County Saturday morning after someone was shot and killed in a home.

Police identified the victim as Rachel Dukus, 57, but so far, police have not shared a possible motive or made an arrest.

As the snow blanketed Pavlick Road, the questions piled up as well.

Neighbor Joan Vincent was stunned to learn someone had been shot and killed in the home where she says an elderly woman lived with several of her adult children.

"They are very nice neighbors. I mean, we all get along, so I have no clue," Vincent said.

The shooting took place in the early morning hours. Troopers said all of the people in the home were taken to the state police barracks for questioning.

Investigators are calling the shooting a homicide.

For hours, police waited outside for a search warrant that would allow them to collect evidence and for the coroner to remove the victim's body.

Vincent recalled the family lent her a hand when her well ran dry.

"They waved to everybody. They were real friendly, like, when I was out of water, they offered me water," Vincent said.

Neighbors say the family who lived in the home was pleasant and friendly, but there were also signs something wasn't right.

One neighbor who didn't want to be identified said, in the past months, police were called to the home twice, but Vincent says she never noticed anything that concerned her.

"I am surprised. Yes, I am."

According to the Luzerne County coroner, an autopsy will be performed on Dukus.
