HAZLETON -- An elderly man is recovering after a horrific attack in Luzerne County.
Hazleton police said the 83-year-old man was beaten and robbed by four men in broad daylight.
Police brought in two men for questioning, but said neither of them is being charged at this time with attacking the man.
Detectives said the attack took place just before noon Monday at North Vine and West Third Street in front of a dentist's office.
Police believe that two of the attackers were hiding in the bushes and the other two were standing on the sidewalk. Then when the victim walked by the group pounced, punched him in the head, took his money, and left him bleeding.
Detectives are calling the attack random.
People who live in the neighborhood say while crime is a problem, this is almost unbelievable.
"If they wanted to take his money, they could have just took his money and left him alone. They didn't have to hurt him like that. That is uncalled for," said Tom Major of Hazleton.
Major says his kids are pressuring him to move away from the Luzerne County home he loves.
"We like where we live, but our kids don't like where we live. They want us to move, but you just don't pick up. I am going to be 69 years old," said Tom Major of Hazleton.
The attack isn't only scary to senior citizens, parents wonder if they can let their kids go anywhere.
"At the age of 8, I could walk to the mom and pop store and it was fine. Now I don't even want to let them out the front door," said Laura Carroll of Hazleton.
The mother of two says while crime seems to keep getting worse, she believes if police target drug sales things can get better.
"You watch them doing their stuff right there, you know what they are doing. I don't know if the cops know about it, but they should," Carroll said.
Police say the victim was taken to the hospital, and is expected to survive from his injuries.
