SCRANTON — A Lackawanna County sheriff’s deputy will be suspended for two months without pay for a serious policy violation.

Deputy Paul Nardozzi admits he allowed convicted killer Neil Pal to talk to his mother on speakerphone while he was driving Pal from prison to Lackawanna County for a hearing.

Nardozzi told Newswatch 16 that he is friends with Pal’s parents.

Pal was challenging his life sentence plus 20 to 40 years for arranging the murder of Frank Bonacci in 2013.

The sheriff’s policy bans prisoners that are being transported to talk to anyone, including attorneys and family.

Sheriff Mark McAndrew tells Newswatch 16 Nardozzi “violated a very clear and devastatingly serious policy,” but because Nardozzi has a clean record and accepted responsibility for his actions, he will be allowed back to work.
