DUNMORE — If you drive through neighborhoods during this holiday season, you probably notice more and more homes with energy saving LED Christmas lights.

The Christmas lights are glowing throughout Jerry’s For All Seasons in Dunmore. A mix of LED lights and the traditional incandescent lights deck the trees there. They light up the shelves, too, but at this store, the LEDs are becoming the big sellers.

“Oh, absolutely. People are changing from incandescent. When their lights are finished, they’re coming in, looking at both and moving over to LEDs,” said Jerry Longo, Jerry’s For All Seasons.

These LED lights can cost up to $10 more than the incandescent versions but experts say they can save 80 percent on electricity costs.

Homes can use a lot of energy on Christmas lights. An average house can spend an extra $100 on electricity. LEDs can bring that down to $20.

“The longer we have them, that’s when we’ll see the savings because I think they will definitely last longer and they’re brighter and more colorful,” said Beverly Barren.

The Barrens are from Dickson City and switched to LEDs several years ago.

“I think they’re brighter, they show better in the weather and everything,” said Roger Barren.

But some avoid switching to these energy saving lights.

“I don’t particularly care for them. I think they’re too bright, the LED lights. I still prefer the old fashioned,” said Ann McGrath of Scranton.

Jerry Longo explains LEDs now provide more variety and more similarities to incandescent.

“Years ago, it was just the ice white, we call it cool white, but they really, really did a good job with the candelight.”

LED lights can do things the incandescent lights can’t, such as changing from white to colored lights.

Plenty of lighting options can lead to plenty of debates in households, but only some choices can save on energy costs.
