WILKES-BARRE -- Police in Wilkes-Barre are investigating how a 2-year-old girl could end up intoxicated.
Police tell us they've questioned the toddler's parents extensively as they try to find out why the girl had alcohol on her breath and in her blood.
Just three doors down from the home where the toddler lived in Wilkes-Barre, Bruce Fendler owns Harry's Market.
When he left the business Monday afternoon, he saw two squad cars at 659 Hazle Street, and thought of a pregnant woman living there.
"I thought they were having the baby. That's the first thing that came to my mind, she's due any day," said Fendler.
Instead, police were investigating how a 2-year-old girl at that home was apparently intoxicated.
Earlier in the day, the girl's aunt and uncle told police they smelled alcohol on her breath, and after contacting Luzerne County Children and Youth, they took the toddler to the emergency room at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Blood tests confirm the child had alcohol in her system.
We've learned that the girl's parents, Donald Trollinger and Jamie Lee Taylor, are being investigated by Luzerne County Children and Youth.
The agency took the 2 year old and another child into protective custody.
We tried several times throughout the day to get the couple's side of the story, but no one answered the door.
At Harry's Market, Bruce Fendler was horrified when he heard the news.
"Cute kid," he said.
Fendler says the girl frequently visited the market. He calls the toddler lively and curious, and wonders how anyone could allow this to happen to such a small child.
"Kids never ask to come into this world, and now the kid has to put up with this? That's sad, very sad."
Late Thursday afternoon, Wilkes-Barre police told us no charges have been filed against anyone, including the girl's parents.
The case remains under investigation, by both police and Luzerne County Children and Youth Services.
