HONESDALE -- Even though we didn't have a lot snow on the ground Wednesday morning, some schools in our area closed for the day and that includes all districts in Wayne County.
Lots of folks kept close watch on what's happening where they live and work.
Even before the sun was up in downtown Honesdale, trucks were spreading salt on parking lots and sidewalks in the event that the weather turns nasty. But without so much as an inch on the main roads, one PennDOT truck headed off without any significant snow to plow.
Head north from Honesdale and road crews for Manchester Township were busy filling trucks to treat the roads.
"We've had a couple inches here and there, some of the lower valleys, there's nothing. That's the way the weather is," said Harold Hawley.
Hawley has been up since 3 a.m. taking care of the roads in case schools were in session. But all three districts closed, and depending on how bad it got, the Rileyville Cafe along Route 191 might close as well.
"Depending on what it does again today we may have to shut down. It's not worth staying open and paying," said owner Cindy Baldwin.
Baldwin says if the roads aren't too bad, then customers show up, and it pays to keep the heat and lights on. Without all the snow some were prepared for, they still wanted to find out what it was like beyond their front yard.
"I got to come up and see what everyone else is doing, wait for the snow plow guys to come in and get their coffee, see how the roads are," said Doug Tyler.
This early in the season, the general consensus is we still have lots of winter left to go.
"The ice is just terrible. We went through over 1,000 tons of anti-skid already. The snow you can plow off, only cinder it once. This we've been doing three, four times a day," Hawley laughed. "(We'll call it quits) about July."
