Communities in our area are getting ready for that snow heading our way, including Lackawanna and Monroe Counties.

It was a light rain in Mount Cobb around 5 p.m. but higher elevations are likely to get more of the snow when it comes.

Cars and trucks were moving along just fine on Route 247. The same goes for drivers on Interstate 84 where earlier Tuesday the speed limit was reduced to 45 mph.

But drivers at a park and ride in Mount Cobb were ready for the storm. A lot of vehicles have windshield wipers up in anticipation of the ice and snow.

Newswatch 16 spoke with PennDOT officials. They say even though it's beginning as rain they are still in "storm mode." That means that road crews including plow drivers are out on the streets working 12-hour shifts to make sure the roads are safe and ready for those who have to head out in the ice and snow.

But for now it seems like the salt those crews put on the roads Tuesday morning has already been washed out by the rain.

A PennDOT spokesperson says the command center for this storm will be in effect until after the storm passes, most likely by Thursday.

In Monroe County, it was also raining Tuesday afternoon, making for extremely wet roads, and a sloppy commute home for many.

On Route 611 near the Stroud Mall in Stroud Township, the roads were only wet. It hasn't been cold enough to have this precipitation change over to ice or snow just yet.

Travel along Interstate 80 in the Poconos near Stroudsburg was moving smoothly.

No major crashes were reported throughout the afternoon.

Drivers are urged to take their time as this rain is expected to change over, making for an icy wintry mix and messy roads later.
