WILLIAMSPORT --Thousands of dollars will be spent to upgrade aging surveillance cameras at the Lycoming County Courthouse. Commissioners approved the plan last week.

A clearer more precise picture is what the county sheriff says he hopes the new surveillance cameras will be able to give. The surveillance cameras at the courthouse are about 10 years old. The county sheriff says it's time for an upgrade.

You may not notice them walking into the Lycoming County Courthouse, but there are dozens of surveillance cameras inside and outside the building on 3rd Street in Williamsport.

"We prepare, we prepare, we prepare. We sometimes say we expect the worst and hope for the best,” said Sheriff Mark Lusk.

Lycoming County Sheriff Mark Lusk monitors some of those cameras in his office.

"You can't identify individuals as easily and as readily as you can when you have a sharper image," said Sheriff Lusk.

The county plans to use $22,000 from natural gas drilling to update and add cameras at the courthouse in the coming year. It's good news for county employees like Christie Shimp.

"Feel much safer. We know who is coming in and out of the county building," said Shimp.

For those who don't work here but have stopped by the court house before, they say they are also glad to hear about the improvements. Better cameras mean better protection for everyone.

"It isn't just for their safety, but for ours also. To make sure our stuff, you know, people aren't being mistreated in there,” said David Seitzer.

"It gives us capability very sharp and distinct activity when we look into our camera system,” said Sheriff Lusk.

Over the next five years Lusk hopes to update and add several new digital surveillance cameras to help prevent problems.

"I just know that coming into work and having the security camera I don't have to worry about anything. I know that my environment is safe," said Shimp.

The county plans to update and add more surveillance cameras at the courthouse by the end of 2015. They hope to continue to upgrade the system over the next 5 years.
