WAYNE COUNTY -- Over the course of the past several months, there has been an outpouring of support for Trooper Alex Douglass and Corporal Bryon Dickson's families with fundraiser after fundraiser.
It isn't often a district attorney's office would go and raise money for victims, but Wayne County District Attorney Janine Edwards says, given the magnitude of the attack at the barracks, her office made an exception.
"The Eric Frein tragedy and search was an incredibly unusual event, so the fact that the district attorney's office is involved and taking care of family, which is Pennsylvania State Police, is certainly unusual," she explains. "And we hope we don't have to do it again. But, it's something our office wanted to do to help out."
Help out by hosting the benefit at KC Pepper Bar and Grille near Honesdale. All the money from ticket sales and raffles will go to the Dickson and Douglass families.
During the manhunt, the state police barracks in Wayne County covered for Blooming Grove while they were out of commission.
"They gave not only their bodies in the search, endless hours, but they also gave their time and their barracks to a barracks that was fallen," Edwards adds.
This isn't the first time a district attorney's office has helped out. The Lackawanna County District Attorney's office organized a food drive for troopers while the manhunt continued day and night.
"At that point, there were hundreds and hundreds of people that were working each day," says Gene Talerico, Assistant District Attorney. "I couldn't imagine the mammoth undertaking to make sure those people were cared for appropriately."
That drive led to around 1,000 meals for those on hunt. As for this benefit, troopers with the Blooming Grove barracks say every bit helps when it comes to taking care of one of their own.
"It's fantastic," says Sgt. Brian Vennie. "There's been so much support and so many fundraisers. The families are going to be well taken care of thanks to this community."
