EDWARDSVILLE – Volunteers of the West Side Little League in Luzerne County said they need donations to fix the backstop and netting damaged by snow last week.
Groundskeeper Jason Hoskins showed Newswatch 16 the rusty poles that snapped under the weight on the snow, at the ballpark that was built back in 1955.
"This last storm that we had before Thanksgiving kind of crippled it and it’s unrepairable,” said Hoskins.
After getting a replacement estimate of $10,000, Hoskins is asking neighbors and business owners in the West Side of the Wyoming Valley for donations.
"If they could donate maybe the material, we could get enough money for labor from the local contractor to do the work for us,” said Hoskins. "To keep the kids off their phones and off the streets down here playing ball, that's very important to me and the rest of the people on the board at West Side Little League.”
John Bonczewski said the field for tee-ball and softball players hosted games for hundreds of kids over the past six decades.
“We put the scoreboard up. We moved the fence. We moved the dugouts,” said Bonczewski. “It served an awful lot of kids.”
