SCRANTON -- A "sit-in" at a university in Lackawanna County is stirring up some controversy.
Some students gathered in the Rotunda on the campus of Marywood University Tuesday to protest and show support of the protestors in Ferguson, Missouri.
According to Marywood's student publication The Wood Word, one of the student protestors hung an upside down American Flag that had been written on.
The writing reads, "There is no justice on stolen land," and "Black lives matter."
The flag also displays the name of Michael Brown, the shooting victim in Ferguson.
University spokesperson Juneann Greco commented on the Wood Word's post on Facebook:
"The writing on the United States Flag pictured on this page as part of a student protest was not sanctioned or supported by Marywood University.
As soon as the presence of the flag was brought to the attention of University administration, the students were asked to take the flag down and complied immediately without incident.
While Marywood University fully supports our students' first amendment rights to freedom of speech, peaceable assembly and freedom of the press, the pictures on this page depicting the desecration of the United States Flag, in no way represent the views, core values or mission of Marywood University."
