SUNBURY -- We have a day for giving thanks and two days named for shopping deals. Now we have a day set aside for giving back. It's called Giving Tuesday.

"It's a nice way for individuals who are community-minded and want to be charitable at this time to give back to their communities," said Keri Albright.

Albright is the executive director for the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way in Sunbury. She says Giving Tuesday started in 2012 with a YMCA in New York City. It is an international movement to get people thinking of giving to charity around the holidays.

This is the second year the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way is participating.

"The United Way targets early childhood education, poverty, diversity, transportation, has very specific areas of impact where your charitable dollars are going," said board member Tony Michetti.

Albright says your contributions to Giving Tuesday don't have to be in the form of money. You can also give back in other ways.

"There are many ways you can give, whether it's volunteering, giving items as a donation, or money."

Albright says the United Way is proud to be part of this international event.

"We don't know what the results are yet, but we just started it. What we do know, though, is every year we will continue talking about it and promoting Giving Tuesday."

The Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way did not raise any money during the event last year, but Albright says she hopes giving Tuesday catches on and becomes as well-known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
