WILLIAMSPORT -- The new YMCA in Williamsport is now open, although the grand opening won't happen until next month.   Newswatch 16 stopped by the "Y" on Monday to find out what members think about the new facility.

While a construction crew works outside, inside a group of women are getting their workout in at the new YMCA in Williamsport.

“This is really nice, it is really nice; it’s so much different," said Holly Springman from Williamsport.

After nearly four years of planning and construction. The "Y" is "unofficially open" on Walnut Street in Williamsport.

Ground was broken for the new facility last year.

"This is a big change, you know this is three thumbs up," said Michael Sadler from Williamsport.

Wililamsport's “Y” has a new building and a new logo. YMCA staff says the project cost around $10 million. Much of that money was donated by the community.

Michael Sadler and his family are already members of the "Y". They took a tour of the new facility.

"The building is, you know it's smaller, but everything is more open you can see you can go from one piece of equipment to the other piece of equipment,” said Sadler.

Others like Greg Starr headed straight to the weight room to check out the new Life Fitness equipment.

"It's going to be like a period of adjustment from the old weights and old equipment that we had to some of the new equipment that we have here,” said Greg Starr from Williamsport.

With the new Life Fitness equipment you can watch TV, go online, and you can also log into the Life Fitness app and track your workouts.

"I'm pleasantly surprised this is somewhat different than what I expected," said Starr.

Younger members had some fun of their own on the basketball court, in the pool, and on the jungle gym in the brand new child care wing.

"We have new toys and stuff like we have bean bags that we can sit on that the old y we didn't have any bean bags," said Ryan Griffin from Williamsport.

The old YMCA building on Elmira Street in Williamsport has been sold. The "official" opening of the new YMCA is in early January.
