DUNMORE -- Robert Dunio can't believe his brother is gone.

Eugene Dunio, 71, of Dunmore was killed crossing East Drinker Street in Dunmore Friday evening. It was something his family had feared because of all the traffic.

"My wife was always yelling at him to don't cross the street all the time, especially at night, but Genie was Genie," Robert Dunio said.

Robert says his brother ignored the warnings because he loved to walk near his home and see the people he had known for decades.

People who live in Dunmore say Eugene was the sort of person who made this neighborhood feel like a neighborhood. He loved to visit the shoe repair store, go across the street for candy, and would have been chatting about the Bucks big game.

At Nick's Shoe Repair, the chair now sits empty where Eugene liked to sit and shoot the breeze

"Just small talk, but important talk because everyone knew everyone. It was nice," said owner John Pugliese.

Pugliese said he too had concerns about the safety of older neighbors on such a busy street.

"I've seen, as they get older, they don't walk as fast and they can't see as well. Yeah, it is pretty dangerous," said Pugliese.

Tony Amendolaro gave Eugene a ride in his van just two days before his friend was killed. He wishes their final conversation had been a little longer.

"We were friends, you know? When you are with a friend you don't shake hands or give a hug or a kiss, you are just friends. You wish now you could go back and give him a hug," Amendolaro said.

Police say that the investigation is ongoing, but they do not expect to charge the driver.
