SCRANTON -- Some students from Scranton started their Thanksgiving morning with a ten-mile walk from one county to another. They do it each year to raise money for a cause.

This year's cause had an extra special meaning for the West Scranton High School students.

While most of their classmates were still in bed, the students put on their snow boots and sneakers and headed out for what would be a long morning.

"The snow's a little rough, I wore boots which is good but they're kind of hard to walk in," said student Ali Basalyga.

They had a lot of scenery to take in along a 10.8 mile trek from downtown Pittston to downtown Scranton. It's certainly not an easy way to kick off their Thanksgiving vacation. But, they said it's worth it.

Each year the kids pick a cause and this year it was a no-brainer. They're walking to help out a West Scranton alumnus who has been through a lot this year.

"This year, because Trooper Douglass is so important to some of our student in particular, and because he is an alumnus of West Scranton High School we wanted to support him. So, that's why we did it for him this year," said teacher Amy Rummerfield.

Trooper Alex Douglass was injured in the ambush on the State Police barracks in Pike County on September 12th.

The students took pledges for their walk that will go towards the Trooper's recovery. They walked with him on their minds.

Especially for one student who is Trooper Douglass' cousin.

"He's done running for marathons and all, I've always been running so I thought I would do it for him. Because Alex would do it for anyone else," Cara Litchko said.

That's cause enough to get out of bed and walk on Thanksgiving morning.

And the students said, no matter the weather, they will be back walking next year too.

"So, I can't say enough good things about our kids and the fact that they are so willing to do for other people on a day like Thanksgiving. To get up and do this, it really is a credit to them," added Rummerfield.
