BERWICK--A longtime Thanksgiving day tradition in Berwick drew people from all over the world to Columbia County.

The 105th annual Run For the Diamonds in Berwick was off to a quick start! This year close to 1,500 runners raced nine miles for...what else? Diamonds!

"I'm excited about it. I think it's going to be a really beautiful run," Holly Welsh said.

Holly Welsh is from Berwick and says it is her first time participating in the Run For the Diamonds. The race puts Columbia County on the map and draws people from all over the world, like Ian Atkinson of Canada.

"The Canadian Bulldogs always come down here. We modeled ourselves after the football team here, the bulldogs," Atkinson said.

Something the runners had to contend with this year was the weather. It was snowing as they were racing!

"You have to take your time, but the challenge is part of what makes people race," Jasen Bohinski said.

"Snow, I think it adds extra nervousness because of the roads being slippery and everything," Welsh said.

The runners tell Newswatch 16 their favorite part of the race is knowing they can go home and enjoy Thanksgiving dinner afterwards.

"Running up the hill will bring the appetite so when you're running up the hill, so when you're done you're ready for that Thanksgiving meal," Bohinski said.

"I have two family meals to go to so I'll have lots of food to eat after so I'm going to pig out," Welsh said.

...and after nine miles, they deserve it!
