MONROE COUNTY -- The snowstorm started out as rain early in the morning hours in downtown Stroudsburg. But all the snow that followed made roads rather treacherous in Monroe County as many tried to get to their Thanksgiving destinations.

PennDOT crews were out in force, trying to keep up with the main roads on the busiest travel day of the year, but as the snow fell fast in the early morning hours, the task was too much to handle.

Drivers couldn't make it up roadways and cars were pushed up towards Route 611 in Mount Pocono instead.

Terry Muffley and his wife got stopped only miles away from their final destination after leaving early in the morning from their home in Geneva, New York.

"We're coming down to my brother-in-laws house for Thanksgiving dinner and we kind of got stuck in the middle of a traffic jam here on a slippery road," said Muffley.

Travel on secondary roads like Route 191 and on Route 611 proved trickier than the main highways. More than 150 crashes were reported in Monroe County during the height of the storm.

A couple from Indiana were passing through the Poconos, trying to get to New Jersey.

"He's white-knuckling it, I'm crocheting, and enjoying the beauty," said Kimberly Gordon of Indiana.

Sullivan Trail in Pocono Township was entirely snow-covered and didn't see a plow until early afternoon.

Drivers who are originally from across the pond in England, couldn't believe what the front of their car looked like.

"There's been probably three accidents we've seen, cars getting towed, probably three or four cars on the way here," said Daniel Savory of England.

"I think interesting is the word. It's been quite fun, but at times it's been a bit shaky," said Wyatt Hill of England.

But some found the bright side of this wintry storm. We found a brother and sister making a snowman near Tannersville, covered in leaves left over from the fall.

"It's good for packing," said 14-year-old Keshawn Jones.

"I don't know, playing in the snow, not being inside all day, it's better," said 12-year-old Kiaya Jones.

This snow is very heavy and wet which is good for snowmen, but it's bad for power lines.

This afternoon both PPL and MetEd each had about 1000 customers without power.
