LOWER TOWAMENSING TOWNSHIP -- It might seem a little bit early, but ski season is upon us and in record time.
It's the earliest opening for Blue Mountain Ski Area near Palmerton in 38 years.
"It's awesome just to get out here before Thanksgiving. You don't get to do that often."
Workers at the ski area say around 2,000 people hit the slopes, a better opening day than in years past.
"This year is a bit stronger for us because we are one of two ski resorts open right now," said Morgan Bell with Blue Mountain Ski Area.
For avid skiers and snowboarders like Eric Speelman of Conshohocken, this day couldn't come soon enough.
"We were here closing day last season, so we figured we should get out here opening day this season," said Speelman.
In a normal year, people wouldn't hit the slopes until the first or second week of December. In this case, an early start typically means a better winter for business.
And while temperatures continue to stay near or above freezing, snowboarders and skiers say the snow is still holding up.
"Some icy spots here and there, but for the most part pretty good," said one skier.
The park will be open Sunday as well, before closing while temperatures rise during the week, then reopening on black Friday for the season.
