KIDDER TOWNSHIP -- It was a great day for skiers in the Poconos Thursday as one resort is open for the season.

Big Boulder Ski Resort in Carbon County is once again the first to kickstart the fun in the snow.

With the swish of their boards cutting across snow, the snow bunnies were off, enjoying the first day of ski season in the Poconos.

“It's opening day, man. We've been waiting for this since summer!”

“It's worth it because it's the first day of the season. Just want to get out here and get a good start, get it going early,” said John Herrmann from Philadelphia.

Big Boulder Ski Resort in Kidder Township is once again the first to open for the season, getting one slope up and running.

“The weather was there and we went for it,” said Heather Schiffbauer with Big Boulder. “We do focus on the one slope. We're blowing on the whole mountain when we can, but we like to get one open when we can. Everybody's anxious and wants to get out there.”

One slope was enough to draw in a steady crowd all day, with people coming in from near and far.

“I got out of school at 12 o'clock. It's a two-hour drive,” said Vince Moron, who drove up from West Chester. “It’s worth it because it’s the first day of the season.”

“It's pretty awesome. I learned, like, a season ago. This is my first time getting a chance to get back out here. It's just amazing. This is my favorite part of the year now,” said Ahsan Ozbourne from Blakeslee.

John Davenport and his son 6-year-old Cody from Effort make this their special day.

“We have a tradition of making it out on the first of every season, and it's always here, so it's been 235 days since we've last skied. We've been waiting anxiously,” said Davenport.

Opening day is also the resort's annual "Boulder Gives Back" drive.

Skiers bringing in non-perishable foods or a new toy, ski for free.

“It's an absolutely great deal. I think it helps out the community and helps out snowboarders,” said Nick Barakos from Stroudsburg. “I love snowboarding!”

Other ski resorts in the Poconos will be opening soon.

Blue Mountain plans to open this Saturday.

Shawnee and Camelback will be opening next week on Black Friday.
