MONROE COUNTY -- The bitter cold temperatures are a rare gift to ski resorts in our area.

Most of them started making snow overnight and have been pumping it out all day.

It's not often they get a day in November where they can make snow like this and we found they are excited to take advantage of it.

The sun was out and the snow was spraying. Afternoon snow making on Shawnee Mountain in the Poconos is not something you usually see in November, but resorts in the Poconos are taking advantage of temperatures 20 degrees below normal.

"Obviously, this is ultimate conditions for early snow making. I mean it's like 20 degrees right now and we're expecting low teens tonight, so we'll be pumping out the snow," said Jim Tust at Shawnee Mountain.

Shawnee upgraded its snow making this season. A lot of it is computerized to best take advantage of the conditions. These cold conditions are easy to take advantage of, creating an early-season buzz.

Shawnee plans to open Black Friday.

"The phones are ringing, the websites are getting hits, people are checking out the webcams, checking out the live snow making, so it's all very good for our industry," Tust said.

"It's awesome to see this in November," said Kelly Joffe at Camelback Mountain.

We talked to Kelly Joffe at Camelback Mountain in a man-made blizzard of snow. Camelback also plans to open Black Friday.

Many years, the weather doesn't allow for that early opening.

Snow making is best below 28 degrees with low humidity and there is plenty of that is in the forecast.

"That's ideal, what's coming up with these cold temperatures for snow making is perfect and we're super excited about it."

With the cold temperatures this week, especially overnight, resorts are able to make a lot of snow and build up quite a base, and remember, it's only mid-November.

"I'm so pumped, I can't wait to get out there on snow again," said John Baker of Henryville.

Snow lovers like John Baker are gearing up to be ready. They know seeing these fake flakes flying on the slopes means the season is near.

"Instantly, as soon as they're open I'm there."

Quite a few resorts in our area are hoping for Black Friday openings.
